1. • AISI 316 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel alloy.
   • It contains 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum.
   • Additionally, it has a low carbon content (UNS S31603), making it the low carbon version of AISI 316.
   • The inclusion of molybdenum significantly enhances its corrosion resistance compared to SS304.

2. Properties:

   • Corrosion Resistance: SS316 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in various environments.
   • Strength: It offers good strength properties.
   • Pitting Resistance: The presence of molybdenum provides excellent pitting resistance, making it suitable for highly corrosive conditions.
   • Heat Resistance: SS316 performs well at elevated temperatures.
   • Price: While it has superior properties compared to SS304, the cost of SS316 is higher.

3. Mechanical Properties (for 25.4 mm diameter bar):

   • Tensile Strength: 580 MPa (megapascals) minimum.
   • Yield Strength (at 0.2% offset): 290 MPa minimum.
   • Elongation in 50 mm: 50% minimum.
   • Hardness (HBW): 79 HRB (Rockwell hardness) in the annealed condition.
